Anyone suffering from chronic pain knows how incapacitating it can be. It can severely limit your wish to be physically active. Since you are always in pain, the last thing you want is to partake in activities that can worsen your condition, even though it’s just to move around. Luckily, regular exercise can help to reduce and manage chronic pain. This post will provide an overview of the relationship between exercise physiology and chronic pain management.
What is Chronic Pain? Chronic pain is defined as pain that is ongoing and continues for six months or longer. Chronic pain doesn’t indicate the type of severity of the pain; it can easily be referred to as an intense and sharp pain that limits you when you move a certain way. It has been estimated that 1 in 5 Australians is living with chronic pain. It’s often complex because chronic pain involves changes to the central nervous system that makes the nerves continue sending pain signals to the brain even after your illness or injury have healed. It can be quite difficult to pinpoint the cause of the pain, and when this happens, diagnosis and treatment can become a case of trial and error. How Can Exercise Help Manage Chronic Pain? Exercise can be an effective way to reduce and manage chronic pain. Exercise helps reverse the changes to the central nervous system and avoid aggravating the pain. This can help you engage more in physical activities to increase the quality of your life by making your daily activities easier to perform. Plus, exercise helps improve your sleep patterns; sleep disorder is often found in people who have chronic pain. Depression, anxiety, or chronic pain itself can reduce with quality sleep. Strength training helps reduce stress as you release those feel-good hormones and improves your confidence. The sculpture memorializes the soldiers who died in service during the First World War. The Winged Victory (a winged angel with a sword and a laurel leaf held high) on top of the monument is a sculpture of Nike (the goddess of Victory) sculpted by Gilbert Doble. The names of the veterans were engraved on the west, north, and south faces of the base of the memorial. The entire monument is set on 3 granite steps and is surrounded by a garden planted with Cyprus trees.
Brief History of The Marrickville War Memorial The Marrickville War Memorial was unveiled on May 24th, 1919, in honor of the 458 local soldiers who died during the First World War. The Winged Victory is the biggest known bronze casting on any memorial in the country. The sculpture was created from thin copper alloy sheeting, and because of this, it soon became unstable. And by 1962, the condition of the monument had worsened so severely that it had to be removed. In 1988, the sculpture was restored and returned to the Memorial. However, it continued to become unstable. In 2008, the Institute for Culture and Society was tasked with assessing the condition of the Marrickville War Memorial. When it became evident that the monument could no longer withstand the severities of the outdoor display, the Marrickville War Memorial partner with the Marrickville Council to create a brief for its replacement. By 2010, the monument was removed and stored. Then in 2013, the Marrickville Council commissioned a new monument for the Marrickville Memorial. And in 2014, they agreed to transfer the monument to the AWM in Canberra. Treatment of the Sculpture After the ownership of the sculpture was passed to the Australian War Memorial, the Institute for Culture and Society, on its behalf help conserve the sculpture. The process involved carefully splitting the upper half, which is the original part from later restorations, careful repair to make the monument stable, and the removal of the overpaint to reveal its original coating. The Institute for Culture and Society then supervised the transfer of the sculpture to the Australian War Memorial in Canberra. At its new home, it became the focal point of the Australian War Memorial's new World War One galleries. New Sculpture The new sculpture was unveiled in April 2015. It was created by Darien Pullen and Corlett, and it pays homage to Gilbert Doble’s original sculpture but with small changes. For instance, the position of the sword held by Nike was changed to pointing down to earth rather than being raised. This was made to stop the sculpture from acting as a lightning rod; it was discovered that it was the major reason the original kept deteriorating. So, Gilbert Doble’s legacy lives on, with the original been displayed at the Australian War Memorial. With the new sculpture being installed, the people of Marrickville once again can honor their local war heroes.

The Marrickville Town Hall provides a vital physical record of the city’s early history, starting from its origins as a small village. On 1 January 1949, St Peters and Marrickville and the Councils of Petersham decided to merge, and this leads to the administrative function of The Marrickville Town Hall been moved to Petersham Town Hall. Also, in 1997, the Marrickville Town Hall has featured in director Bruce Beresford’s World War 2 movie: Paradise Road, and it also doubled as Raffles Hotel in Singapore. The distinctive high ceiling fans and wood paneling present in the hall were reminiscent of architectural styles, which is popular during World War 2. Latest Update on Marrickville Town Hall Recently, the Inner West Council favored to convert the Marrickville Town Hall into live music and performing arts centre. The conversion of the historic hall will see Marrickville Road become one of Sydney’s premier cultural precincts. Also, the Inner City Council announced that the Marrickville Town Hall would be renamed. And the decision to change the name of the Marrickville Town Hall was done to honor the great contribution of the Greek migrants who helped found the Inner West as the origin of Australian multiculturalism.

Located on the former site of the Marrickville Cottage Hospital, the new Marrickville Library and Pavilion is an important part of the district's history. The problem with heading to the library as cool as the Marrickville Library and Pavilion is that it is hard to get any work done with so much to admire.
Integrating heritage elements of the structure with contemporary design, the Marrickville Library and Pavilion's latest addition is a feat of sustainable and clever design. With over three-stories, you will find everything you need. The facility even has a brand-new pavilion which is available to hire for functions and events. History of Marrickville Library The building was initially used as a hospital. The Marrickville Cottage Hospital was founded in 1897 and was built in response to the high number of injuries sustained from the industrial sites and local factories. When the hospital was closed in 1991, it was used by a number of community groups before the local authority formed a partnership with Mirvac (builders) to build Marrickville Library as part of the development of the site. The library was built on a former hospital site, and the builders were able to reuse about 27,000 bricks from the old structure in the new building. Marrickville Library now boasts of over 1,000 metres of items, which include DVDs, movies, robots for amateur mechatronic engineers, and meeting rooms. With a massive increase in the shelving space of the library, over 20,000 new books were added to the collection, taking it to about 85,000 books. The whole second floor of the library is devoted to the historic art book collection that until now was quite difficult to get access to by the general public. The Marrickville Library is a well thought out beautiful library that provides great spaces for diverse people to learn, interact, and spend a shared community vibe together. The Marrickville Pavilion There is a great area connected to the Marrickville Library known as the Pavilion, where organizations and local residents can hire for presentations and events. The Marrickville Pavilion is ideal for cocktail parties, conferences, beautiful weddings, and private dinners. The pavilion is also the perfect backdrop for your bespoke event. The Marrickville Pavilion includes two separate break-out spaces and access to a fantastic outdoor area that will greatly complement your next event. In addition, the Marrickville Library has a full-size catering kitchen, integrated audiovisual facilities, onsite parking, acoustic ceiling with rigging points, hearing loop, wheelchair accessible, and more. Children’s Library One of the most popular areas of the Marrickville Library and Pavilion is the children's library. The padded shelf with books makes it easier for kids to get cosy. They also get to enjoy the outdoor courtyard to take in some fresh air. You’ll be sprawl out of the large garden space while your children enjoy the children's playground and library. The courtyard garden features the Kangaroo sculpture designed by Joanna Rhodes. The Kangaroo sculpture served as a reminder of the site's history when the entire area was known as the Kangaroo Grounds.
