Banksmeadow is an Eastern suburb that is about 9 km from NSW's capital city of Sydney. The suburb is named in honour of Sir Joseph Banks, a naturalist who came to Australia in 1770 with Captain James Cook. When he looked out from the deck of the HM Bark, he said the suburb is” as fine a meadow as he has ever seen.” However, the problem is that he did not actually get out to confirm what he thought he saw. While literally, it was a swampland covered by rushes.
While Banksmeadow used to have a residential presence, those structured have since been leveled to make room for the heavy industry, manufacturers, and Goodman business parks that make the suburb a place where a lot of people work, but no one lives. Today, the suburb is mainly an industrial area with commercial developments linked to the nearby Port Botany. This includes a large Orica Limited chemical facility and a couple of other oil terminals.
Since Banksmeadow is an industrial area, it only has one public school, which was established in 1881 and located at the corner of the Trevelyan and Wiggins Streets, Botany. Banksmeadow is bounded by the Spring Street, Collins Lane, Wentworth Avenue Page Street, Holloway Street, and railway line, in the north, Denison Street and Corish Circle in the east, Botany Bay, Randwick City, Beauchamp Road, Brotherson Dock, and South West Channel, and in the south and Southern Cross Drive General Holmes Drive and Foreshore Road in the west.
