Earlwood is Sydney’s suburb located 10 kilometres South West of the Sydney central business district. The suburb is in Sydney’s immensely multicultural Canterbury Bankstown region, which was a result of waves of immigration in the decades since World War II. Earlwood is mainly a residential area with a number of commercial activities around the main road. Earlwood was important during World War II as a mustering and training point for troops before heading overseas.
Air movements were controlled by Sydney’s Air Defence Headquarters in the Eastern southwest Pacific from Bankstown airport. The airport is now an international destination for trainee pilots. Earlwood has a shopping centre on Homer Street and a Coles supermarket, and shops are positioned close to Clarke Street. The suburb has a number of cafes and restaurants that are scattered between the retail outlets. Fast food outlets include a KFC located on William Street and an Oporto and Souvlaki Bar on Homer Street. At some point, two cinemas were sited on Homer Street, and they are known as the Mayfair and the Chelsea.
Housing in Earlwood ranges from small units to townhouses and suburban lots. The suburb is serviced by a couple of bus routes by Punchbowl Bus Company and the Government Bus. The commercial centre of Earlwood is also close to the Bardwell Park railway station and Inner West & Leppington Line of the Sydney Trains network. The railway offers a convenient route to Sydney CBD, and road access to the West, South, and North is relatively easy.
