Sydenham is a small Inner West suburb in the state of NSW, Australia. Sydenham is located 8 kilometres south of Sydney's central business district and is surrounded by St Peters, Marrickville, and Tempe suburbs. Sydenham’s history is strongly intertwined with the neighbouring suburbs of Tempe and St Peters. These suburbs share common features and development, which are not easily disentangled. Sydenham got its name from the London suburb of Sydenham.
Sydenham is directly situated under the flight path of the 3rd runway of Kingsford-Smith Airport. Sydenham residential area was mainly east of the railway line, while the industrial sector was primarily west of the line. And there are some crossover or industrial and residential development along Unwin's Bridge Road. A significant part of the suburb no longer exists as it was deemed uninhabitable due to the aircraft noises. 152 homes were acquired by Commonwealth Government in 1995 and destroyed amid huge protests, which prevented the demolition from commencing for a couple of days. Significant heritage structures were preserved.
Sydenham offers both residential and industrial developments. Small shops are located around the juncture of Railway Road and Unwins Bridge Road. In the adjoining suburb of Marrickville, there are commercial activities located along the Marrickville Roads, which is close to the border with Sydenham. The Sydenham railway station is an intersection for 3 lines on the Sydney Trains network, including Bankstown lines, Airport & South, and Illawarra. Plus, Sydenham is a few minutes away from the Marrickville Metro Shopping Centre.
