​Tempe is situated on the northern bank of the Cooks River. The suburb is more known for its proximity to Sydney Airport - it is separated by Alexandra Canal from the Sydney Airport. Tempe is bordered by Marrickville, Alexandria Canal, Cooks River, and St Peters. People from all over Sydney used to come to the Cooks River, which used to be a recreation hub to swim and enjoy the sandy banks.

The suburb continues to find popularity with professionals and young families due to its proximity to Sydney and more affordable than some of the surrounding suburbs such as Enmore and Newtown. Tempe also boasts of a number of sporting and outdoor activities. The Tempe Recreation Reserve, located next to the Cooks River is ideal for older kids who enjoy large rope pyramids, flying foxes, and spinning.

There is a shopping strip along the Princes Highway, which includes diners, pubs, dentists, and newsagents. The Marrickville Metro Shopping Centre is close by and offers a wide selection of shopping facilities. Also, the Unwins Bridge Road and Princes Highway run through Tempe and offer great road access towards Sydney.
